FLOWERY BRANCH – You know that a franchise is in a good place when players start lobbying to join the team.

Shawne Merriman, a once-promising pass rusher who announced his retirement in March, took to Twitter on Sunday to make a plea for the Falcons to sign him.

He promised double-digit sacks or he’ll donate half of his salary (veteran minimum) to charity.

Merriman, 6-4, 272, believes he can combine with Osi Umenyiora to ramp up the Falcons' pass rush.

Merriman, 29, was a three-time Pro Bowler and played with San Diego (2005-2010) and  Buffalo (2010-2012).  Merriman has 45.5 sacks over his career, including 17 in 2006.

However, he had 39.5 of his sacks over his first three seasons in the league. After being busted for using PEDs he was unable to re-capture his pass rush. His drop off post-suspension was just too dramatic.

Here are the tweets:

Don't  expect the Falcons to pick up the phone if Merriman calls.  Based on his past issues  -- steriods, alcohol overdose and partying like a Rock Star mogul -- he clearly wouldn’t be a locker room fit. Coach Mike Smith re-stated a couple of times already this season that you have to win in the locker room first.

Here’s an article that lays out all of Merriman’s issues.

Clearly, it might be time for Merriman to get on with his life's work. Hopefully, he received his degree from the University of Maryland and can find some gainful employment.

The Falcons take the field at 10:30 a.m. for their walk-through and at 3:30 p.m. today.  They will be in pads for the second day of camp.

Gates open up at 2:30 p.m. for the 3:30 to 6:05 p.m. practice today.  Here's the training camp schedule.

Later today – if access goes according to plan -- we will have:

  • Linebackers coach Glenn Pires hopefully will give us an update on linebacker Brian Banks and Kroy Biermann, who's been spending an awful lot of time in the linebacker drills.
  •  Defensive backs coach Joe Danna hopefully will give us an update on the rookie corners and the rookie UDFAs.
  • Coach Mike Smith will available on the field following the second practice practice.
  • Running Back Steven Jackson will be available for the first time in training camp on the field following practice.
  • We'll also request several other players and put up some videos. Check at 10 a.m. , 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. for AJC. Com updates and later at night for post-practice blog posts.
